Functional Mapping of the Human Brain

A review of current and potential imaging techniques that can be used to map human brain activity is presented. The most advanced method, i.e. positron emission tomography (PET) and repeated cerebral blood flow (CBF) imaging with oxygen-15 labelled water is then further detailed, including recent advances and current unsolved questions in the acquisition and analysis of such data. The major results obtained using this technique in adults in the field of speech and face processing are then discussed. Finally, the feasibility of applying some of these imaging techniques to the study of cognitive functions in infancy is discussed.
