This paper presents a novel energy recoverable hydrostatic pressure exchanger to apply the sea water desalination equipments. In a reverse osmosis (RO) system for desalting sea water, more than 70 percent of the supplied sea water (brines) which were impassable RO membrane are bypassed, resulting in a high energy losses. In this paper, the hydrostatic pressure exchanger which consists of a embedded water hydraulic motor and water hydraulic pump was proposed and investigated in order to recover the energy of the bypassed brines. The pressurized brines are supplied to the embedded water hydraulic motor as power sources and the water hydraulic pump is driven by the output torque of the embedded motor, as a result, the energy of the bypassed brines can be recovered. To examined the optimal volumetric displacement of the embedded water hydraulic motor, the simulation model was constructed using the AMESim ® commercial software and experiments. Through results of simulation and experiment, the feasibility of energy recovery effect on the proposed hydrostatic pressure exchanger was investigated.
