Design and implementation of high speed digital multi-programme system based on ITU-T J.83 annexures A and C

The ITU J.83 recommendation defines the standards for Digital multi-programme systems for television, sound and data services for cable distribution. In this paper, an architecture of a reconfigurable multi-channel encoder has been given which complies with Annexes A and C of the J.83 specification. The designed architecture can encode 160-channel time multiplexed input stream using multiple encoder channels in parallel and can deliver peak encoding data rates of up to 2.4 Gbps. The encoder channels have been designed to be area and power efficient by reducing redundancy of modules, sharing of resources and control logic among the encoder channels. The system has been made flexible by using software to configure the number of encoder channels and to select the required Annex.
