This paper aims to discuss the promotion of renewable energy in Latin America within the context of security of power supply by reviewing the development of the power sector and current data to show generation matrixes, that is, power generation technologies and the installed capacity of each one. Furthermore the trends regarding the supply security are analyzed and determined by means of a comparison with Spain. Finally, the laws and regulations promoting the investment and the use of renewable energy sources to produce electricity in Latin America are presented, as well as, standards on power quality.
