Unbalanced voltages mitigation using the maximized and flexible grid-connected inverter voltage support functionality

Abstract The appearance of unbalanced voltages in power networks is becoming an increasingly frequent occurrence. Considering that all of the voltage deviations from nominal values have a detrimental effect on the electrical grid functioning, the idea of addressing these irregularities using the inverter-based distributed generation sources became attractive. The scheme proposed in this research allows the mitigation of any kind of voltage profile excursions (balanced and unbalanced, under- and overvoltage voltage deviations) in accordance with the converter's ratings. In fact, the developed control algorithm enables correction of the voltage profile in any manner desired by the grid operator, but to the extent that the inverter's current limitations are not surpassed. The effectiveness of the algorithm was tested using the emulated distribution network model consisting of three nodes with the distributed generation sources and four passive nodes.
