Throwing light on lightning

Abstract Lightning is a well-known life-threatening natural phenomenon. The lightning not only threatens the life of humans and animals but also threatens the nominal operation of electrical and electronics devices. Therefore, appropriate lightning arresting mechanisms should be designed to arrest the lightning and its impact, including voltage and current surges in power systems. To design the lightning surge arresters, the characteristics of the lightning have to be studied, which are presented in this paper.
