This golden jubilee volume contains the following papers: The History of Geotechnical Engineering Up Until 1700 (Kerisel, J); A History of Soil Properties, 1717-1927 (Skempton, AW); The Last Sixty Years (Peck, RB); The First Terzaghi Oration: Amuay Landslides (Lambe, TW). The oration traces improvements made during 1955-1985 in the capability of predicting landslides along the coastline of Amuay, Venezuela. Analyses, laboratory tests and field measurements (and observations) have resulted in advances in three aspects of the procedure of predicting landslides, namely: shear strength, pore pressure and expression of safety level. Advances in the profession's knowledge also contributed to these advancements in landslide prediction. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (TRRL)
