A Simple Two‐Lane Traffic Model

We introduce a simple lattice‐based exclusion model which can be considered as a crude model of traffic on a two‐lane motorway. The model is a two‐lane generalization of the well‐understood Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) which is known to reproduce some of the features of single‐lane traffic such as shocks and jams. Recent analytical progress to elucidate the phase diagram of our model (within a mean‐field approach) is discussed and compared to the results of simulations. We concentrate initially on the pure case where the hopping rates in each lane are site‐independent and then briefly consider possible effects of substitutional disorder (i.e. site‐dependent hopping rates).
