In this paper a free access mat for dual band operation is investigated. The free access mat consisting of tightly coupled patch array which provides an easy access for short range wireless communications is proposed. In a conventional wireless access system, the electromagnetic wave is radiated from a wireless device to another through the free space using built-in antennas so that the propagation loss is large. In the system using the free access mat, the electromagnetic wave is concentrated in the mat and transmitted in low loss. The excitation from wireless devices to the free access mat is obtained by proximate coupling. Design for dual band of 2.4 and 5 GHz based on the free access mat operating for single band of 5 GHz, and calculated small propagation loss characteristics are presented.
