Bandung Thermal Comfort Study: Assessing the Applicability of an Adaptive Model in Indonesia

Abstract A thermal comfort study was conducted in October 2005 at the School of Architecture, Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), at Bandung, Indonesia. The warm humid tropical city of Bandung is located at the 7° south latitude and situated at about 700m above sea level. Twenty participants of ten males and ten female students were voluntarily studied for their subjective thermal responses. A number of instruments were used to measure indoor climatic parameters during the study. Results from the study showed respondents' neutral temperature was 24.7°C in terms of air temperature (Ta) or 25.7°C in terms of globe temperature (Tg) or 25.4°C in terms of operative temperature (To) or 26.1°C in terms of standard effective temperature (TSET). This paper discusses the whole study and provides some comparison to previous study done by Karyono in Jakarta a few years ago, and also a comparison to Adaptive model of Humphreys and Auliciems to see the applicability of this model in Indonesia.
