Wearable and Tactile E-skin for Large-Area Robots

The use of tactile sensing systems for ubiquitous robotic and telehealth monitoring will be one of the revolutionary changes in this century. Currently, robots are being used in almost all industries, but the growing need is to have robots that have a sense of touch and feel so that they can coexist with humans at the workplace and home. E-skin can promise that functionality by which they can feel the touch the same as humans do. The proposed E-skin uses the pressure-sensitive matrix (row–column) for measuring the change in capacitance using polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) as substrate and copper electrodes. This system can be viewed as a large area E-skin with the capability of measuring both static and dynamic forces. It helps in telehealth, pain management, remote temperature monitoring, and robotic-assisted surgeries. This wearable E-skin shows the effectiveness of technology in evolving the human–robot (H-R) co-working and touch in the present era.
