A magnetic field magnetodynamic finite element formulation for foil winding inductors

The straightforward application of a classical magnetodynamic formulation for foil winding modeling necessitates to consider each foil as a massive conductor in order to take the actual non-homogeneous current distribution into account. In this paper, a method is developed in the frame of the h-φ magnetodynamic formulation to deal with foil windings in 2D as well as in 3D. The proposed method uses edge and nodal finite elements and consists in explicitly defining the constraints peculiar to foil inductors. In addition to defining the correct current distribution in the foils, the method also provides a natural means for discretizing the circuit relations associated with the foil windings, i.e. the relations between their currents and voltages.
