In order to control microstructure of heavy forgings,a robust parameters control methodology based on Taguchi method and numerical simulation was proposed.Two-step upsetting cylinder was taken as an example.Height to diameter ratio of ingot,forging temperature,speed of die and height of compression in each step were chosen as design variables,uniform and small microstructure of final forging was considered into the objective function.Optimal parameters were acquired through S/N analysis.The analysis of variance shows that the most significant parameters are forging temperature and height to diameter ratio of ingot,Height of compression in each step and speed of die don't contribute much to the microstructure function.The virtual experimental result agrees with the predictive value very well.This method avoids large number of simulations and reduces computing time,it is a guide to control the microstructure of heavy forgings.
