Modified Smallest Available Report First: New Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation schemes in QoS-capable EPONs

Abstract Optimum utilization of upstream bandwidth shared among several Optical Network Users (ONUs) is an important issue in an Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON). An EPON network must provide a differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) for different applications. In this paper, we shall modify SARF (Smallest Available Report First) and propose two novel algorithms, one called the Modified Smallest Available Report First (MSARF) and the other called the Modified Smallest Available Report First using Hybrid Granting Protocol (MSRF_HGP), in order to reduce both packet loss and packet delay. The SARF is a good method to reduce the overall packet delay in EPON, but at the expense of increasing packet loss rate. Our performance evaluations show that the proposed MSARF and MSARF_HGP algorithms can significantly reduce packet delay and packet loss.
