Effects of demand side management on bulk system adequacy evaluation

Demand side management (DSM) is an important concept that can play a valuable role in assisting electric power utilities to meet future electricity demands. One aspect of DSM is load shaping or management (LM) and a wide variety of LM techniques have been proposed. This paper examines the effect of selected load management techniques on the individual load point and system reliability indices of a bulk electric power system. The analysis is extended to illustrate the reliability effects of off-peak load addition and the use of wind power as distributed generation. The IEEE-Reliability Test System with customer sector allocations at each load point is used in the described studies.
