Abstract There is considerable interest in the use of titanium alloys in place of steels and nickel alloys, however, the poor tribological properties of titanium have mitigated against its widespread use. Wear resistant surfaces of an iron-nickel alloy IN 907 have been diffusion bonded to the high temperature titanium alloy IMI 829, using interlayers to aid bonding. High shear strength joints have been produced. A combination of Ta and Ni interlayers has been found to be particularly advantageous, increasing both the shear strength and the plastic deformation to fracture.
