Extrapolation non-reflecting boundary conditions

Abstract A system of non-reflecting boundary conditions (NRBCs) is first formulated via a direct simulation of one-way wave propagation using a space-time extrapolation governed by a single artificial wave speed. The NRBCs are then generalized by coupling a space extrapolation to the space-time extrapolation and by introducing several artificial wave speeds instead of the single one in the space-time extrapolation, separately. A combination of the above two generalizations leads to a general representation of the local NRBCs. Spurious reflections from a boundary, on which NRBCs generated from the representation are imposed, are analyzed for the step-by-step transient computation and illustrated by numerical experiments for the acoustic case. Relations of the present study with the other major local NRBCs, particularly, the Higdon's theory, are finally discussed and future research directions are briefly addressed.
