A model-theoretic approach to folk taxonomy

Students of folk bio-classification are beginning to question established formalized theories of taxonomic structure of the type offered by Gregg (1967) and Kay (1971). Some of the problems discussed below concerning these extant settheoretic treatments of biological taxonomy have been raised also in recent papers by Hunn (forthcoming) and Randall (in press). As my response to these problems, I propose in this paper that we abandon the set-theoretic basis of taxonomic theory (like Randall but unlike Hunn), while at the same time retain-
