Local Model Networks Applied to Nonlinear Generator Excitation Control

Abstract A multiple model control technique, that incorporates linear control methods within a non-linear structure, is applied to excitation control of a synchronous machine. A non-linear, adaptive generalized minimum variance (GMV) controller is straightforwardly designed to provide automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS) roles. The capabilities of the local model network (LMN) controller are then compared with an adaptive GMV controller, illustrating its excellent performance and the transparent nature of the LMN design.
