Science and industry as public service: Too often the limited unfavorable example overshadows a host of good works

This year will almost certainly bring a continued increase in social concern and involvement where they are of importance to science and industry. Youth continues its ascendancy despite some of its phony and irresponsible minority. Its idealism and discontent with society's structure and behavior will be strong influences. And the obvious defects in our system are bases for pressure toward change. Scientific departments of universities along with the management of industry are showing concern over the dwindling interest in their pursuits by the bright young minds entering colleges and careers. Both the academic scientists and the industrialist might give more thought to the rate at which an era of greater social responsibility is developing and to what this means to each of them in his own area of work.
