A novel high current solid state power controller

Solid state power controller (SSPC) is used in power distribution system to replace traditional electromechanical circuit breaker. It distributes and protect power to different loads. With SSPC, the system is more reliable with improved fault handling capability. SSPC will provide instantaneous faults and current squared time protection (I/sup 2/t). Currently low current rating SSPCs are available on the market. In this paper a high current 270 V/50 A SSPC is developed. The design challenges include new device technology for high current rating, current sensing scheme for high current, I/sup 2/t control implementation and temperature compensation. Simulations and experimental results are shown to verify the design.
