Future implications of the log domain paradigm

The implications of the recently proposed circuit design techniques surrounding the evolution of log domain filters, and in general, externally linear (ELIN) filters are explored. The discussion begins with a recapitulation of some classic filter design ideas which allow the development of log domain filters to be included as a natural extension. Then log domain filters of several types (i.e. class A, class AB, and syllabic companding) are discussed with the intention of showing their potential as alternatives to more standard designs in the future. Following this, the "log domain paradigm" is explored in terms of its potential for improving existing designs, including CMOS, in addition to suggesting new approaches.
