Evaluation of freon modules for power electronics designed for a locomotive traction drive

Advantages offered by the freon immersion technique, especially applications for diesel electric locomotives, are described. Experimental data pertaining to recently developed freon modules which are used for cooling high-power semiconductors is presented. A procedure based on a well-known caloric method is used to determine the component losses for high-performance converter and inverter designs with calculated efficiency values higher than 98%.<<ETX>>
