Protection and Fault Localization in a WDM-PON

The novel self-restorable wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) are proposed and demonstrated. When the failures occur in the distribution and/or feeder fiber, we can successfully protect the network by using optical switches and/or Ethernet switches. If the working feeder fiber or working distribution fiber is cut, optical switches change the transmission path within 10 ms to protection feeder fiber or protection distribution fiber. The fault in the transmission path also can be recovered with help of link aggregation control protocol. As a result, the availability of the system is increased with the negligible insertion loss. In addition, the fault localization is implemented by using a tunable optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) realized by a Fabry-Perot laser diode (F-P LD) and a tunable filter.
