A Pilot Evaluation of Text Display Formats for Weather Information in the Cockpit

This study examined four alternative means to present weather information to flight crews in the cockpit. The four means were abbreviated, plain english, chunked, and structured into vertical columns. In addition, four alternative means were also examined for pilots to enter requests for weather products. These were soft key select, numerical, keyboard entry of character identifiers, and a pseudo mouse function using arrow keys to select groups of responses. The data were gathered in a part-task study environment.
