Electro-Magnetic Transient Simulator and its Application in HVDC Simulation

Electro-Magnetic Transient Simulator (EMTS), which is independently developed by China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), is a computer cluster based fully digital simulation system for power grid. It is an advanced, open and expendable system with high calculation speed and friendly man-machine interface. During the same simulation, EMTS can be integrated with electromechanical transient program to conduct hybrid simulation of large-scale power grid. In this paper, at first the authors present the design thinking, architecture, hardware configuration and software constitution of EMTS; then its application in the simulation of HVDC transmission project from Three Gorges Hydropower Station to South China Power Grid is described in detail. Simulation results are similar to the characteristics from theoretical analysis and practical engineering, so it is proved that EMTS can meet the requirement of the research on HVDC.
