Summary The identity and nomenclature of the nine species of Vitaceae in Rheede's Hortus Malabaricus are discussed, and their types and distribution are also indicated. The most elaborate commentary on Rheede's (1678-1693) Hortus Malabaricus is that by Buchanan- Hamilton, the publication of which, however, stopped at volume 4 (Hamilton, 1822-1835). The manuscript of his commentary is in the library of the Linnean Society of London and thanks to the kind assistance of the Librarian, one of us (B.V.S.) was able to examine the relevant part of the manuscript dealing with the Vitaceae. Of the other early publications on the Hortus Malabaricus, Dennstedt's (1818) Schlissel zum Hortus Indicus Malabaricus and Dillwyn's (1839) A review of the
