Investigation of surface scattering by applying plastic particle detectors

Abstract The angular intensity distribution of 150 keV He+ ions scattered in a forward direction from (100) surface rows in a {100} MgO surface plane is investigated. Cellulose nitrate plastic detectors are used to record the two-dimensional scattering patterns. Evidence for specular surface reflection, surface channelling, row scattering, and blocking is found, depending on the magnitude of the incidence angle.
