When is ITS Work Zone Deployment Worth It

The purpose of this paper is to present a case study which implements evaluation methodology in order to test whether intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are a solution to the problem of work zone traffic mitigation. The research provides and evaluation tool for transportation planners to determine when a ITS system is a good investment and when other traffic mitigation options may be more viable. This proposed methodology is applied to the Glenmore Trail/Elbow Drive/5th Street S.W. interchange in the City of Calgary.
