Dynamic analysis of ‘tree-like’ structures undergoing large motions — a finite segment approach

Abstract New and recently developed concepts useful in the study of the dynamics and control of ‘tree-like’ structures are presented. The incorporation of flexibility effects make the analysis applicable for monitoring the transient effects of large structures. The procedures presented here use a Finite-Segment-Modelling (FSM) to develop a computer formulation of the governing equations. The procedures use Kane's equations as developed by Huston et al. and the flexibility effects are modelled by springs and dampers at the connecting joints. The evaluation of the springs and dampers coefficients through the finite-element-method is addressed.
