Interfacing optimizers with planning languages and process simulators

The use of optimization models in decision support systems is increasing rapidly. Successful applications span the entire planning-scheduling-control hierarchy. Some outstanding examples are the mixed integer linear programming system described by Geoffrion [1974] for distribution system design (strategic planning), a network-based DSS for marketing and distribution of refined petroleum products developed by Klingman et. al. [1985] (short term tactical planning), a vehicle routing and scheduling system [Fisher, et. al. [1982]], and many instances of real time optimization in the process industries (control).
