Surface roughness of manufactured femoral heads with high speed turning

In the present paper, the manufacturing of femoral heads, using the technique of the high speed turning, is reported. This method is widely used in the industry combined with hard part machining and leads to having better surface roughness and decreasing of cutting time. The femoral heads where manufactured in a CNC lathe in a range of cutting speeds between 150 and 480 m/min, made of Steel AISI 316L. After the manufacturing, the surface roughness was measured using atomic force microscopy according to the strict standards of ISO 7206. The results are presented in this paper, which show that the surface becomes better as the speed increases and accomplice the international standard.
