Criteria for Acceptable Wind-Induced Motions

This paper discusses criteria for evaluating acceptable wind-induced building motions. The paper draws on the results of moving room experiments and the performance of actual buildings during severe wind conditions. It is important to also recognize that wind action causes both translational and torsional vibrations and that both contribute to the perception of building motion and occupant discomfort. A two-part criterion is suggested. First, it is suggested to limit the resultant peak acceleration, including the effects of both translational and torsional motion, to an acceptable level, which is determined by building occupancy. Second, a limit is imposed on the torsional velocity of the building, which can give visual cues and accentuate the apparent motion.
