Report on the Japan Social Development Fund Project on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining in Papua New Guinea

The report begins with an overview of artisanal and small-scale mining in the Wau-Bulolo District of Morobe Province and wider Papua New Guinea. Although its main emphasis is on the current livelihoods of PNG ASM communities, the review includes historical information that is necessary to understand the sector’s present configuration in the WauBulolo District and beyond. The report then discusses some of the challenges and opportunities offered by ASM in relation to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) contained in the United Nations Millennium Declaration (2000) of which Papua New Guinea is a signatory.
