Assessment of emotional functioning in brain-impaired individuals

The subject of emotional functioning following brain damage has been broadly considered. This article leads with a description of emotional functioning as it is commonly considered relative to brain damage. Two basic models are presented, each varying in terms of the degree to which a strict brain-behavior relationship is maintained. Methodological concerns inherent in this body of literature are highlighted. Modification of variables and analyses are considered in terms of reporting sources, longitudinal designs, and analyses of change. The issues of low base rate and individuals lost to attrition are specifically addressed in this context. Methods of accounting for effects of cognitive impairment on personality test performance are considered in terms of neurocorrection. Future directions of research are discussed.
