The cooling/heating speed, power consumption and minimum/maximum attainable indoor temperature of inverter and non-inverter heat pump air-conditioners were experimentally investigated using a model house built to simulate actual operating conditions. Maintaining the surrounding of the model house at a constant temperature and humidity, the air-conditioner installed inside the model house was operated. Starting from the constant initial temperature, the time and the amount of electric power consumed to cool down/heat up the model house to the specified temperature were measured. Also the minimum/maximum temperature that could be attained was investigated. The present work demonstrated that the inverter air-conditioner could cool down 25-50% faster in case of cooling, and heat up 3 times faster in case of heating than the non-inverter type. Also power consumption of the inverter was reduced to half of the non-inverter in case of heating.
