Using Qualitative Methods to Evaluate a Group: Does the Survival Skills for Women Program Increase Self-Sufficiency?

ABSTRACT This article provides an example of how qualitative methods may be utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured group. After a discussion of the methodology of qualitative interviewing, the evaluation of a specific group seeking to increase the self-sufficiency of women is presented. The evaluation was conducted by BSW students in a field unit within a public housing complex. The qualitative methodology held positive advantages for the student-researchers, the agency seeking evaluative information on the group program, and the respondents themselves.
