Design of a passive two dash-pot damping system for spatial cable vibrations

A two dash-pot damping system for the mitigation of single harmonic cable vibrations in any spatial direction is investigated. The viscous coefficient and the installation angle of each dash-pot damper are sought for minimum difference between the targeted viscous coefficient and the resulting viscous coefficient acting on the cable. This investigation is made for the hypothetical case of constant, and realistic case of time varying, angles and lengths of both dampers. Both investigations demonstrate that the difference between the targeted and resulting viscous coefficients acting on the cable is minimized if each damper is designed with the targeted viscous coefficient and the installation angle is 45?,?which holds for any spatial direction of cable vibration.
