Simulation of railroad crack growth life using laboratory specimens

Abstract The crack propagation of a railroad rail detail fracture has been simulated with laboratory compact tension specimens. The fatigue crack growth rates were measured for five different train spectra. The train stress spectra represented a range from light stresses (general freight) to heavy stresses (125 ton unit coal train). The crack growth rates were dependent upon the stress spectrum type.
