Digital Techniques in the Telephone Network

This chapter deals with the various functions that are needed to make a digital telephone system operate. It begins with the subjects of synchronization and time-division multiplexing and then covers the basic functions of error coding, scrambling and channel coding. Figure 5-1 relates these functions to one another as well as to source coding as they might be found in a generalized digital transmission system. Signaling and supervision are covered next, followed by monitoring and digital speech interpolation.
