Analysis of Track and Wheel Soil Compaction

ABSTRACT ANSYS, a fmite-element program, was used to simulate soil compaction beneath track-type and wheel-type tractors. The field condition was modeled by use of a layered soil profile. The soil was assumed to be a nonlinear, plastic, homogeneous material. Soil bulk density predicted with the model was compared with bulk density measured from soil samples. The model estimated within 2.5% the soil compaction beneath 15-cm depth, but significantly underestimated the bulk density in the top layer of soil. Simulated results are also presented for three uniform soil profiles with different strengths.
