Effect of a decreasing magnetic field on the flow of nitrogen gas

Abstract A flow of nitrogen gas in air is found to be accelerated when it travels in the direction of a decreasing magnetic field ( 1.3 T, −0.3 T/cm) available from an ordinary electromagnet. This observation is explained as being due to the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field affecting the interface of the gas groups having different magnetic susceptibilities.
