EMG feedback training during dynamic movement for low back pain patients

This paper provodes a brief overview of the use of EMG biofeedback in the physical rehabilitation of patients whith chronic low back pain. Obvious limitations in some current treatment methodologies and empirical foundations for an alternative EMG feedback training technique are discussed. The alternative approach involves individual assessment of muscle function and comparison to normative data followed by EMG feedback training in relevant static and dynamic activities. A case report is provided to illustrates application of the technique. When used with proper attention to basic principles of kinesiology, biomechanics, and anatomy, electromyography may provide a more rational basis for behavioral assessment and treatment of low back and other chronic pain patients.
