6.4.2 Life extension of Civil Infrastructural works ‐ a systems engineering approach

This paper discusses the application of Systems Engineering in projects where large civil structures like bridges, ship locks, weirs and tunnels are being renovated and prepared for a new phase in their life cycle. In the Systems Engineering literature there is little attention given to life extension of such structures. Some of the typical problems with renovation projects of civil infrastructure works are described, and based on that a practical approach is presented using Systems Engineering principles. This results in a few simple process models who also close the gap that exists between Systems Engineering standards and Asset management standards. These models can be used to plan and execute these kinds of projects in a systematic way.
