This paper describes how rehabilitation of a concrete pavement on a multi-lane urban commuter freeway provides an interesting challenge for the highway engineer, especially in terms of economic restraints. The need exists for a hot mix resurfacing system that will produce a long wearing surface with good friction properties and that will withstand high traffic volumes. The paper outlines the background and describes the rehabilitation techniques used to improve the driving qualities of a 12-16 lane urban commuter freeway, 50 km in length, in Toronto. Details provided include pavement history, traffic data, selection of pavement rehabilitation techniques and environmental and capacity improvements.
