Performance indices : do they help with decision-making ?

Much time and effort seems to be spent discussing measures, particularly indices, that may indicate performance of a section, or process, within an organisation. Examination of the major conceptual issues in choosing performance measures for the maintenance process leads to the development of various frameworks. Such frameworks can be utilised in categorising proposed and existing performance measures. Guidelines for the selection of measures that relate to organisational performance and the bottom line can subsequently be developed.
