PASSAGE OF INFLUENZA STRAINS IN THE PRESENCE OF AMINOADAMANTANE

1-adamaiitanamine hydrochloride (1-aminoadamantane) has been shown to have a moderate viristatic effect against influenza A viruses in tissue cultures and eggs1, in experimental animals2 and in prophylactic trials in human volunteers3r415. Previous studies have noted a considerable variation in the sensitivity of influenza A2 strains to aminoadamantanel 16. In addition, under conditions of high multiplicity of infection in tissue cultures, breakthrough of influenza virus multiplication was noted7. This was attributed to either drug-resistant influenza virus particles in the inoculum, or to the resistance of a proportion of the cells to the protective effect of aminoadamantane.
