Thermal Management Modeling for Integrated Power Systems in a Transient, Multidisciplinary Environment

The investigation of the thermal management requirements of gas turbine integrated power systems is becoming increasingly important during the conceptual design phase of advanced commercial and military aircraft engines. Much of this emphasis is due to the escalating thermal loads and the increasing interac tions between the various subsystems in today’s high-power applications. As a result, dy namic modeling and simulation of thermal management systems (TMS) in an integrated fashion is now of prime importance. The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) software has previously shown promise in the area of steady-stat e thermal modeling. The transient simulation capabilities and integrated modeling env ironment of this software are leveraged here to simulate the transient thermal re sponse within an integrated highpower concept. A proof of concept model has been created of a typical more-electric system that highlights the capability of the improv ed modeling method. For this model, the propulsion system and TMS have both been simulated in NPSS and linked to an electrical model created in Simulink. The results o f this integrated power system model are then presented. Nomenclature h = enthalpy m& = mass flowrate q& = heat transfer rate p = pressure t = time V = volume ρ = density
