Because of their low operating and maintaining costs, geothermal heat pump (GHP) systems with vertical borehole heat exchangers are an increasingly popular choice for providing heating and cooling to residential and commercial buildings. Recently, utilization of pile foundations of buildings as ground heat exchangers have attracted much attention because they reduce the cost and enhance the heat transfer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the GHP system with 150 energy piles for a store building. For this purpose, a typical design procedure was involved with a combination of design parameters such as building loads, heat pump capacity, pile diameter, and ground thermal properties, etc. The performance characteristics including seasonal system COP, average annual power consumption, and temperature variations related to energy piles were calculated and compared.
