Summary The influence of up-grinding and down-grinding on the contact zone has been compared with respect to six factors: level and distribution of Surface temperature, forces, roughness distribution, Occurrence of visible burn, contact length and relationship of the entry region and exit region. Through a better understanding of the influence of these two modes on the contact zone, some general influences about the effective difference between up-grinding and down-grinding are presented in this paper.
